Court date set for man accused of assaulting students at Craigmont elementary school

A Reubens man is scheduled to appear in a Nezperce courtroom on Jan. 8 for allegedly assaulting students at Highland Elementary School in Craigmont earlier this month. \

35-year-old Byron Edwards faces three misdemeanor counts of injury to a child. He was transferred to the Lewis County Jail from the Nez Perce County Jail, where he was being held on two felony warrants out of Umatilla on drug and theft charges.

Court records say Edwards was at Highland on Dec. 17 visiting his fifth grade son, when a substitute teacher witnessed him tripping a 10-year-old student to trip, and putting another 10-year-old in a headlock. Another student claimed he was slapped by Edwards.

Authorities say Edwards left the school with his child and was arrested the next day at his place of work in Nez Perce County.

A Lewis County Judge set Edwards’ bond at $10,000 and issued a no-contact order, prohibiting Edwards from having contact with the alleged victims or their families for a year, or until the case is resolved.
