Kamiah claims district crown

Kamiah claimed the Idaho District II 1-A Division I Girls Basketball Tournament championship with a 56-42 win over Lapwai Thursday night at the Lewis-Clark State College Activity Center.

Senior post Shelby Cloninger led all scorers with 21 points and senior point guard Bailey Nygaard added 18 as the Kubs raced out to an early 8 point lead. Five different players scored in the first quarter for Kamiah in improving to 18-3 on the year.

Lapwai, which falls to 19-4, was led by senior guard Natahnee Spencer who scored 20 points in the loss.

Both teams will represent District II at the Idaho State 1-A Division I Girls Basketball Tournament next week at Columbia High School in southwest Idaho.

The district tournament wraps-up Friday night with the 3rd-place game between Prairie and Troy at the LC Activity Center. The winner of the 3rd-place contest will advance to a state tournament play-in game in St. Maries Saturday against a District I opponent.

Live radio coverage of the Prairie/Troy game will be broadcast on KORT in Grangeville.
