8-year-old Lapwai boy dies in accidental shooting

An 8-year-old Lapwai boy died Wednesday evening after what authorities say was an accidental shooting.

Nez Perce Tribal Police and Nez Perce County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call reporting a gunshot wound at a residence in the 200 block of Lolo Street at about 4:45 p.m.  Emergency crews say the boy suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

Nez Perce County Coroner Gary Gilliam said the child had died.

It was not known Wednesday night who fired the shot and no names have been released.

The incident remains under investigation by tribal police and the FBI because it happened on the Nez Perce Reservation and tribal members are involved.
