Meridian woman dies from injuries in Monday’s car accident south of Whitebird

A Meridian woman injured in Monday’s two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 95 south of Whitebird that claimed the life of her husband has succumbed to her injuries.

The Idaho State Police say 67-year-old Prudence Barnes died Thursday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.  Her husband, 68-year-old Richard Barnes, died at the scene of the crash in Idaho County.

According to the ISP, Barnes was driving a 2013 Ford Pickup northbound and attempted to pass a 2001 Freightliner Semi truck and trailer driven by 56-year-old Mark Pottberg, of Sanford, Colorado.

While passing in the opposing lane, Barnes drove his truck and camp trailer back into the northbound lane before clearing Pottberg’s vehicle. The semi struck Barnes’ vehicle causing both to leave the roadway. The pickup went down an embankment east of the highway and came to a rest on its top.

Pottberg was uninjured.

Both Barnes and Pottberg were wearing seat belts.
