The University of Idaho football program hasn’t had a winning record since the 1999 team finished second in the now non-football Big West Conference with a 7-4 record. Last season the Vandals finished the season with just one victory, and its worst winning percentage in the program’s modern history.
Head coach Robb Akey says the team knows that in order to turn things around they must perform at the highest level come game time.

The Vandals open the season Saturday night in Tucson against Arizona. Kick off is scheduled for 6pm Pacific with live coverage beginning at 5pm on Talk Radio 950 KOZE-AM.
Idaho Governor Butch Otter has announced the award of a $1 million grant given to strengthen the state’s High Risk Insurance Pool. The award was given to the state by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Otter says the pool is a private-public partnership that helps get insurance coverage to Idahoans who otherwise would not have access to health care.
Idaho Gov. Butch Otter (R) comments
More than 6,300 Idaho residents have utilized the pool since it inception and during that time, the pool has paid nearly $29 million in medical claims.
People who benefit from these pools usually have a history of health problems that make it extremely difficult for them to find affordable health care coverage.
Showers and cooler temperatures continue to keep activity at a minimum on the approximately 21-hundred acre Porcupine fire burning about 20 miles southeast of Elk City. Fire Information Officer Vickie Guthrie says due to the fire’s relative inactivity, fire managers have decided to open some previously closed roads in the area.
Fire Information Officer Vickie Guthrie comments
The fire is listed as 20 percent contained and crews continue suppression efforts targeting hot spots.
The University of Idaho football program will open the 2008 season at Arizona Saturday with something it hasn’t had in five years: coaching stability. Second year Head Coach Robb Akey’s entire staff has stayed together in Moscow as the group works to rebuild a program that has had anything but consistency on the sidelines in recent years.
Akey says with all the coaches back, combined with a solid returning nucleus of players, the Vandals have many of the components in place to begin to have success on the field.
Head Coach Robb Akey comments on winning
Idaho will be opening its season against a Pac-10 opponent for the 5th time in the last 9 years. Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm Pacific Time in Tucson with pre-game air time set for 5pm on Talk Radio 950 KOZE-AM.
Fire crews are still working to contain the 21-hundred acre Porcupine fire burning 20 miles southeast of Elk City. Fire Information Officer Vickie Guthrie says while showers and cooler conditions have helped, the fire is still somewhat active in spots.
Fire Information Officer Vickie Guthrie comments
The fire is still listed as 20 percent contained, but because the blaze is not threatening any immediate resources, some personnel and equipment are being allowed to re-deploy and re-assigned to other fires and duties in the region.
The Washington State football team, which has been hit hard by injuries this fall, has sustained another setback as senior defensive lineman Andy Roof has been dismissed from the university by the WSU Student Conduct Board.
The 22-year old Roof was allegedly involved in a fight at a party on Pullman’s College Hill last April. First year Cougar head coach Paul Wulff says the board’s decision is disappointing, and creates potential depth problems at the position.

Wazzu opens the season Saturday against Oklahoma State in the Cougar Gridiron Classic at Qwest Field in Seattle. Game time is set for 12:30pm with live television coverage on Fox Sports Net Northwest.
The 2,100-acre Porcupine Fire burning about 20 miles southeast of Elk City has been held in check by a combination of fire crews and mother nature. Information Officer Vickie Guthrie says cooler temperatures and rain showers have allowed crews to gain the upper hand.
Information Officer Vickie Guthrie comments
Full containment estimates are still targeted for October 1st due mostly to the fact that if the fire continues to burn into the wilderness and away from resources, fire managers will likely pull back on full-scale suppression efforts.
The Lewis-Clark State volleyball team opens the 2008 season this weekend hosting the five team Holiday Inn Express tournament at the Activity Center. After a somewhat surprising 26-8 campaign last year, the Warriors have been picked by the Frontier Conference coaches as the league favorite and are ranked 16th in the NAIA pre-season national poll. 2nd year head coach Jen Greeny says there is more pressure on the program to succeed this year, but most of it comes from within the team itself.
Head coach Jen Greeny comments
With nine returning players and a highly touted recruiting class, expectations are running high for a return trip to the NAIA National Tournament in November.
Greeny continues
The Warriors play twice Friday, opening the tournament with Corban College of Oregon at 2pm, followed by a 6pm contest against Concordia University of Oregon. Other teams in the field include Westmont College of California and Northwest University of Washington. The tournament runs through Saturday with four matches per day.
