The Lewis-Clark State men’s basketball team opens the 2008-09 season this weekend in the Quinn Classic Tournament hosted by Eastern Oregon University. The two-time defending Frontier Conference Tournament Champions have re-tooled after losing six players from last year’s squad that finished 22-10 and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri.

Head Coach Tim Walker says he expects the new look Warriors to be more balanced and versatile than last year.

Despite the loss of three starters, LC returns two thirds of its starting backcourt in junior Napoleon Gordon and senior Brian Duckworth.

The Warriors open the season against in-state rival College of Idaho Friday at 6pm PST and face Eastern Oregon Saturday at 8pm PST in LaGrande, Oregon.

Newly elected Nez Perce County Commissioner Mike Grow is looking forward to making a positive contribution to county government once his term begins.  4K News caught up to the former professional boxer who admitted he was somewhat surprised at his upset win over incumbent Democratic candidate J.R. Van Tassel in Tuesday’s election.

Grow prevailed in the commissioner’s race by a 54 to 46 percent margin. He joins current commissioners Ron Wittman and Doug Zenner.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting in Nez Perce County, incumbent District 7 Senator Republican Joe Stegner has defeated Democratic challenger Barb Kramer 61 percent to 39 percent.

Democrat Dale Buttrey, who had been appointed Nez Perce County Sheriff earlier this year following Jim Dorion’s absence, will remain sheriff, beating Republican Steve Jenkins 53 percent to 47 percent.

Republican Mike Grow ousted incumbent County Commissioner J R Van Tassel 54 percent to 46 percent.

In the Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District board race, incumbent Bob Clark keeps his seat, receiving 745 votes to Ronald Rees 604.

In the Idaho Legislative District 8 Senate race, Republican Lee Heinrich defeated Democrat Randy Doman 61 percent to 39 percent.

Incumbent Republican Ken Roberts retained his District 8 Position A House seat, turning away Democrat Richard Adams 60 percent to 40 percent.

Final numbers from Clearwater County show Democratic incumbent county commissioner Don Ebert beating Republican Joy Hall 52 percent to 48 percent, with a margin of 129 votes.

In Idaho County, Republican Doug Giddings won the sheriff’s race, defeating Democrat Carlos Martinez 52 percent to 41 percent, with write-in candidate Herb Lindsey receiving 7 percent of the vote.

Republican James Rockwell got 74 percent of the vote to claim the Idaho County Commissioner District 2 race over Democrat Shelley Dumas, who had 26 percent.

Despite winning its only match scheduled last week the Lewis-Clark State volleyball team slipped one spot to #11 in the latest NAIA national poll. The Warriors are 24-1 on the year and will wrap up the regular season on the road this week with matches against Carroll College Thursday and Rocky Mountain College Friday.
LC will return home to host the Frontier Conference Volleyball Tournament Friday and Saturday November 14th and 15th.

Meanwhile, the Lewis-Clark State cross country teams both held steady in their respective national rankings. The Warrior men remain the 11th ranked team in the nation, while the LC women’s team holds down the #13 spot.
Both teams are preparing to host the Frontier Conference Cross Country Championship races this Saturday.

As voters in Nez Perce County cast their ballots at the polls for the General Election, officials say they can do so with confidence after pre-election tests were conducted last week. County Clerk Patty Weeks says everything is functioning perfectly.

Nez Perce County is one of the few Idaho counties that still uses the punch-card system to record votes. However, this will likely be the last election voters will be using the punch-style apparatus.

Optical scan voting requires the voter to fill in a box rather than punching a hole through the selection. Counties across the nation are eligible for federal money to help offset the expense in the voting system changeover.

A common question many voters have come election day is where do they vote. Voter precincts are located at various buildings in cities and in rural areas in counties.  In Nez Perce County, Clerk Patty Weeks says voters can locate their precinct by calling the clerk’s office or by looking on-line.

Idaho voters who have failed to register for the 2008 General Election may still do so at the polls. Idaho is one of nine states that allows election day voter registration.  Nez Perce County Clerk Patty Weeks says same day registration is common among the counties and is relatively easy to do.
