Lewis-Clark State College and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics officials have reached an agreement to keep the annual Avista NAIA College World Series baseball tournament in Lewiston, Idaho through 2012. NAIA Manager of Championship Sports Scott McClure says both parties are pleased with the outcome of all negotiations.

Under the new extension plan, Lewis-Clark State as the host will now be required to accept a first round bye should they be seeded #1 or #2 in the 10-team field. Previously, the host institution could be seeded no higher than 3rd in order to guarantee a tournament appearance on opening night. Tournament Director and LCSC Athletic Director Gary Picone, who spent the past several months working with NAIA officials on an extension plan believes the college’s willingness to amend the current host guidelines helped in fostering a new agreement.

The contract extension also will help traveling teams by covering more of their costs. Under the current agreement, teams are responsible for airline travel to Spokane, Washington and then ground transportation – usually buses – to get to Lewiston. Those costs will now be covered by LCSC under the contract extension. LCSC is in its 17th year as serving as host for the week-long tournament, which begins the Friday of Memorial Day weekend annually.

The American Baseball Coaches Association, in conjunction with the NAIA will once again be sponsoring its annual Kid’s Clinic on Thursday afternoon, May 22nd prior to the start of the World Series at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.

World Series Tournament Director Gary Picone says the clinic is conducted at no charge to participants with top-notch instruction from coaches and players from each of the ten series teams.

Officials with the 2008 Avista NAIA World Series are gearing up for this year’s national tournament at Harris Field and are expecting large crowds throughout the event’s week-long run in Lewiston, Idaho. Gary Picone, Tournament Director says ticket sales have been brisk locally, and as teams qualify, availability for the most desirable seats may dwindle.

The main ticket booth, located adjacent to Harris Field at the Activity Center, will also be open one hour prior to the first game scheduled each day through the sixth inning of the last scheduled game for walk up purchases.

The Lewis-Clark State baseball team claimed its second straight NAIA West Coast Super Regional title with a 4-3 win over Azusa Pacific Thursday night at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho. Junior right-hander Matt Fitts earned his third complete game victory, improving to 11-0 on the season as the Warriors posted another hard fought win over the Cougars.

The Santa Rosa, California native scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run with nine strikeouts and two walks to become one of only five pitchers in program history to post an 11-0 record in a season, and is now just two wins shy of tying the program record for single season wins of 13 last accomplished in 1988 by Chuck Higson who went a perfect 13-0.

Offensively, sophomore second baseman Josh Ashenbrenner went 2 for 2 at the plate and drove in two runs, while senior first baseman Ikaika Lester added two hits, including his 8th home run of the year and also picked up two RBI as LC out-hit Azusa 9-6. With the win the Warriors improved to 53-5 on the year while Azusa dropped to 45-10.

The Lewis-Clark State baseball team rallied to beat Azusa Pacific Wednesday night at Harris Field to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three NAIA West Coast Super Regional series.

Junior left-hander Michael Guerrero pitched seven strong innings allowing 3 runs on seven hits with 6 strikeouts as the Warriors claimed a 4-3 victory over the Cougars. Guerrero’s 115 pitch effort upped his record to 8-1 on the season and junior left-hander Blaine Hardy provided two innings of no-hit relief to claim his 4th save of the year.

Offensively, LC junior designated hitter Sean Halton had four hits, including his fourth home run of the year, and drove in two runs while scoring twice in leading a relatively quiet 10 hit attack. What the Warriors lacked in runs they made up for in efficiency as LC tied a season-low of leaving just four runners on base.

With the win LC improved to 52-5 on the year and leaves them one win shy of claiming the Super Regional title. Game two is set for Thursday at 6pm PDT at Harris Field with live coverage on Talk Radio 950 KOZE-AM and on-line at koze-sports.com.

The Lewis-Clark State baseball team will host Azusa Pacific in the best-of-three NAIA West Coast Super Regional series this week at Harris Field. The Region I champion Warriors are the top-seed in the 14 team Super Regional playoffs being played across the country.

Azusa is the #3 seed and qualified for the Super Regional round after sweeping the Region II tournament last week in southern California. LCSC Athletic Director Gary Picone says the school and the community are excited to host the post-season round which pits two of the nation’s best programs head-to-head Wednesday, Thursday and if necessary Saturday.

The meeting between the Warriors and Cougars is a re-match of last year’s Super Regional played in southern California, and could be a prelude to a potential match-up in the upcoming World Series as both teams have already qualified for the national tournament.

Lewis-Clark State College will hand out a total of 560 degrees and certificates to one if its largest graduating classes in the college’s 115-year history at Friday’s commencement ceremony in the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston, Idaho.

LCSC will award degrees and certificates to 539 graduates, which is its third-largest graduation class. Two years ago, LCSC had 567 graduates. Eighteen graduates on Friday will receive at least two degrees and/or certificates, including Karen Hunter of Orofino, Idaho, who will earn four degrees and certificates. She will receive Bachelor of Applied Science and Associate of Applied Science degrees in both Paralegal and Legal Assistance. The college also has 112 graduating with honors this year. The commencement program will begin at 6pm PDT, and the event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 4pm PDT and seating is open except for a small area reserved for special guests. There is also an area set up for wheelchairs next to the gymnasium floor. The program will also be webcast live on http://www.lcsc.edu/graduation/k.htm.

LCSC President Dene Thomas will be the main speaker at commencement, while Susan Odom, chair of the LCSC Faculty Association, and Matt Smith, LCSC’s student body president, will give short greetings.

Emeritus status will be awarded to three retiring individuals – Humanities professor William Johnson, Business Technology & Services professor Julie Sages, and Technical & Industrial professor Lynn White. Following the commencement exercise, the LCSC Alumni Association will hold a free reception for graduates, families, friends and alumni at the Student Union Building where cake and refreshments will be served.

The Lewis-Clark State baseball team completed a season sweep over Gonzaga Monday night in Spokane, Washington. Junior right-hander Ryan Woods allowed an unearned run, while scattering five hits with 4 strikeouts over 6 innings of work in improving to 8-1 on the year.

Senior Justin Mace added 2.2 innings of scoreless relief as the Warriors beat the Zags 8-3.

Offensively, Lewiston senior Kyle Greene had two hits, including his team leading 29th double and 17th home run, and had three RBI, while sophomore second baseman Josh Ashenbrenner and senior outfielder Nic Benton had three hits apiece.

Greene’s double was his 29th of the season – tying him with former Warrior Chad Miltenburger for the most 2-base hits in a season. Up next, LC opens the best-of-three NAIA West Coast Super Regional series against Region II champion Azusa Pacific at Harris Field Wednesday night.
